About Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic
About 18 miles south of Ely, Nevada you will find a scenic, forested retreat known as Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. Located in the stunning Egan Mountain Range, the park is not just rich in outdoor adventure, but rich in history too. You see, the park is mostly known for it's six beehive shaped charcoal ovens that were used all the way back from 1876 to 1879. Hence the name, kids!
It was these ovens that helped process the rich silver ore that was once discovered in the area. Then, the mining ended and the ovens were used to shelter travelers. They even had a reputation as a hideout for stagecoach bandits!
How is THAT for some history!
Today, the ovens remain and they are a popular destination for families who want to explore the fascinating past.
Of course, we're in Nevada so it's not just history that you can enjoy at Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park. There is a wealth of outdoor adventure waiting to be enjoyed too!
You can grab those hiking boots and hit the hiking trails, taking you deep into the surrounding landscape. Keep those eyes peeled because you might just spot some of the parks wildlife, including mule deer, grouse and elk.
The trail system allows for mountain biking too, and during the winter months the trails are the ideal spot for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing too!
For a spot of fishing, head to Willow Creek. Rainbow Trout are stocked as needed, and the browns and brook trout are naturally reproducing.
The park also has fantastic views of Wheeler Peak, located in the Great Basin National Park. In addition, if you decide to stay the night you will be treated to some of the starriest skies in the West.
Grab that sense of adventure, and let's go!
