We hope you are ready for an adventure, because the Schiele Museum of Natural History is a whopping 60,000 sq ft inside and get this, nearly three-quarters of a mile long!  So grab those sense of adventures because we're going exploring!

There is SO much to see within the indoor AND outdoor exhibits of this popular natural history museum. Whether it's historic fun, dinosaurs, nature or wildlife, there is something for you!

Kids can take a step back in time with a visit to the 18th Century Backcountry Farm. Experience the way of life of the settlers with living history presentations in period buildings, and seasonal interpretations complete with hogs, sheep and chickens!

Want to go back in time even further? Visit the Stone Age Heritage Site where you can see how our ancestors were the cutting edge of technology. The family can walk among the stone circles, the earthen burial mound, and even petroglyphs that give an insightful glimpse into our past.

Want to travel back even FURTHER? Yes, we're off to the age of the dinosaurs! The Schiele Museum of Natural History has full-bodied models of these incredible creatures that have captured the imaginations of so many. There are dino fossil specimens, hands-on exploration in the lab, and find out how scientists unearth stories from all those years ago!

Explore nature on the near mile nature trail, or learn all about fascinating history of the American Indians.  There is local North Carolina natural history to explore, as well as the amazing wildlife of North America!

There are a combination of permanent and travelling exhibits ideal for reinforcing the founding principles of knowledge in repeat visits whilst maintaining that sense of excitement.

The store is a wonderful source of books and toys that mix fun with education and provide you with a memento of your visit. Members receive 10% off too!

Teachers corner

Field trips to The Schiele Museum are an exceptional way to supplement classroom instruction to meet state standards for curriculum and instruction. Students will have access to permanent exhibits, traveling exhibits, the outdoor spaces on the nature trail, museum store, an array of educational programs, and an immersive dome theatre experience in the planetarium so call for more details!

Is Schiele Museum of Natural History fully accessible?

All of the museum's indoor exhibits are accessible by wheelchair, and all public floors of the museum can be reached by using an accessibility ramp.

Any additonal information?

Allow up to 2 hours for the exhibit galleries, then 45 minutes for most programs, 45 minutes for the nature trail and same again for the farm! So it's a good half day at least if you want to explore everything!
