Dive those kids straight into a vat of culture at the Oakland Museum of California! Spend the say taking in all the incredible art, paintings and installations that fill the various exhibits. 

This is the cultural story of California.

There are always a number of exhibitions on throughout the museum. These rotate, so make sure you keep an eye on what's on, and what's coming up so you don't miss out. It also means that you can keep going back and seeing something new!

There are also permanent exhibitions which take you through a collection of California inspired works. The Gallery of California Art is a living and breathing space filled with energy and ideas on the states land, people and creativity.

The Gallery of California History is always evolving, and focuses on the profound cultural impact of immigration on the state. There are over 2000 artifacts to check out in this exhibition alone!

There are even artifacts that date back to the gold rush!

Then finally at the Oakland Museum of California, the Gallery of California Natural Sciences showcase the states climate, habitats, ecosystems, wildlife and geology, with a focus on Oakland.

Here there are over 100,000 research specimens, including birds and mammals, reptiles and amphibians!

Think museums aren't family friendly? Think again! This museum offers free entry for those under 18 (and half price admission for adults!) where you can enjoy food trucks and music during these family nights!

The museum also hold family programs like the History Hangout for kids aged 5 - 12, so check the calendar events to see what's coming up!

I’m Hungry! Can I get food at Oakland Museum of California?

The Blue Oak Cafe is a lovely place to sit out in the sun, or under their shady umbrellas, and enjoy some lunch! Have a coffee break, mid-afternoon snack or relax for a leisurely lunch.

Any top tips when visiting?

The OMCA garage is located at 1000 Oak St. with entrances on Oak and 12th Streets. Parking fees are $5 per hour with an early-bird discounted flat rate of $20 (in before 10 am, out before 5 pm). Those parking before 8 am and leaving before 10 am will pay the regular incremental rate.

Garage hours: Saturday-Thursday 6 am-7 pm. Friday 6 am-10 pm.

Does Oakland Museum of California have a gift shop?

Of course there is a shop, but make sure you have your pocket money! There are art related products, books, as as well toys, books and games just for kids!

Teachers corner

The museum is a great place for kids to expand their education in the arts and natural sciences. They offer a school program guide, as well as self-guided visits or organized school tours.

Is Oakland Museum of California fully accessible?

There are now three accessibility ramps available for entrance to the Museum. A ramp is located at the main entrance of the Museum on Oak Street between 10th and 11th streets, as well as on the corner of our new entrance along 12th Street facing Lake Merritt.

A new ramp along 10th and Fallon streets provides direct access to our cafe on the Mid Level of OMCA. ADA and families-with-stroller parking is available on the top level of the garage at 1000 Oak St.
