About Laupahoehoe Train Museum

The Laupahoehoe Train Museum and visitors' center celebrates the story of Hawai'i's railroads, as well as the rich history of the Hamakua Coast, so get ready for a journey through railroad history in gorgeous Hawai'i!

The goal of the museum is to preserve, promote and protect the historic, educational, and cultural interests of the railroad, and if kids LOVE trains - this might just be a place to visit!

This small community-run museum is found on the beautiful Hamakua Heritage Coast, so if you want amazing scenery AND history, Laupahoehoe Train Museum has you covered!

Much of the information that you can see at the museum is on the Hilo Railroad and it's birth in 1899, through to 1946 when it stopped its services because of a devastating tsunami

The museum itself is located in the old station agent's house, which is actually furnished just as it would have been in the early 1900s, so kids can just imagine what life would have been like over a century ago!

Spend the day exploring a fascinating collection of photos, railroad artifacts and memorabilia from days gone by, and afterwards get out and explore the museum grounds, which are planted with tropical fruit trees and ornamentals - it makes a lovely place to stroll, relax or picnic!
