About Joplin History and Mineral Museum

The Joplin History and Mineral Museum explores the history of Joplin from its beginning as a mining community through the tornado of 2011. The Dorothea B. Hoover History Collection and the Everett J Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Collection are displayed. The National Historical Cookie Cutter Exhibit is also housed at the Museum. Enjoy viewing Smithsonian quality minerals and learn about the people and events that have made Joplin a great city with an exciting future.

Grab a magnifying glass and look at the large minerals after you enter the Mine Entrance. Use your phone to access the QR codes for additional information on the displays. Watch a short film on mining and miners and their request for help for better working conditions. Upstairs view the history of mining and view fluorescent minerals. Downstairs, kids can choose a free book inside the playhouse and a cookie cutter from the National Cookie Cutter Exhibit. See a miniature circus, the destruction of a 2011 tornado, Bonnie and Clyde artifacts, and learn about many Joplinites and historic businesses. After your tour, be sure to buy a beautiful mineral and get a free crystal growing kit. Don't forget to take a picture of the recycled dinosaur at the entrance.
