HISTORIC FORT ADAMS is off Harrison Ave. in Fort Adams State Park. Built 1824-57 and remaining active through World War II, Fort Adams is one of the largest coastal fortification in the United States. Designed for both land and sea defense, the property provides scenic views of Newport Harbor from atop the walls as well as underground listening tunnels. Tours of the fort feature an exhibit by the Naval War College. Allow 1 hour minimum. Daily 10-4, mid-May to October. Guided tours are given on the hour. Last tour departs at closing. Admission $10; $5 (ages 6-17); $25 (family). MC, VI.
