About Giant City State Park

Giant City State Park is just FILLED with outdoor adventures for the family, with over 4,000 acres of forest, bluffs, ponds, and limitless opportunities to enjoy what Mother Nature created!

Giant City State Park is unspoilt beauty, and visitors of all ages will find something they love within this Illinois gem. Just south of Carbondale, the park is close to civilization, but is remote enough to get away and escape into nature.

Love fishing? Grab those rods and park yourselves next to the steams or lakes and enjoy time catching some big ones! If you LOVE climbing to new heights, then why not try out the rock climbing available in the two designated rock climbing and rapelling areas.

Camping is permitted within the park, as is horseback riding! If you have your own horse, you are more than welcome to bring him or her, but if you don't, there are places to rent because Giant City State Park has an equestrian ground!

A great place to start your adventure is at the Giant City Visitor Center, where you can check out displays on the local wildlife, as well as a huge topographic map of the park so you can really plan your day, to get the most out of it. The staff are super friendly and knowledgable so if you have any questions they can help!

The park got its name from the Streets of Giant City, found along the nature trail which are 12,000 year old sandstone formations that resemble city buildings with narrow "street" like passageways, so they are always impressive to see too!

So grab that sense of adventure kids, because it's time to explore this natural Illinois wonder!
