About Fort Pulaski National Monument

Kids, let's take you back to the 19th century, where masonry fortifications were the USA's main defence against those trying to attack from overseas.  Then, the Civil War brought in new technology and history was starting to change course.

Fort Pulaski National Monument was part of that landmark turning point that changed the history of invention and military science for good. Sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? Well, that's because it is!

You see, during the Civil War, it was at Fort Pulaski that the Union army used rifled cannon, causing the Confederate garrison inside the fort to surrender. If they hadn't, imagine how different the USA could have been today!

Now, you can visit the fort and learn all about it's amazing history for yourselves - right on the spot where it happened! 

At Fort Pulaski National Monument, families can experience exciting and interesting activities all year round. The Fort itself is a huge large-scale outdoor exhibit, showcasing fine examples of historic military architecture with it's drawbridges and ditches. Don't forget your camera!

Inside the fort, kids can see exhibits that highlight the history of the construction, as well as it's eventual fall as even more advanced military technology came about.

They also offer guided tours throughout the week, where you can learn even more about the fort and ask as many questions as you like! Kids - we thought you might like that one!

If you are feeling adventurous, don't forget that around the fort itself you can enjoy the amazing nature, whether you want to hike, bike, and even kayak! If you love photography and studying nature, it's a pretty special spot for you too! 

You can even fish on the banks of the Savannah River,

I’m Hungry! Can I get food at Fort Pulaski National Monument?

There are restaurants, hotels and convenience stores for food on Tybee Island and Wilmington Islands. They are the closest.

Any top tips when visiting?

The guided tours run at 11am, 1pm and 2:30pm Sun - Thurs, with 11am and 2:30pm tours Fri & Sat. They also have 1pm Ranger Programs on Friday and Saturdays.

Does Fort Pulaski National Monument have healthy eating or Vegan options?

Why not take a picnic! There are covered and outdoor picnic areas available during park hours, and you don't need to reserve.

Is Fort Pulaski National Monument fully accessible?

Facilities: Visitor Center parking, restrooms, and exhibits are wheelchair accessible. Fort lower level, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Picnic area parking, restrooms, and tables are wheelchair accessible.

Any additonal information?

Pets are welcome in the monument, but they are not permitted in the public buildings. The summer can get hot so don't leave pets in the cars.
