About Dacotah Prairie Museum

When you step into the Dacotah Prairie Museum, you step back in time over 100 years ago to witness the people, progress and natural history that combined to propel the prairie region into existence.

Through their permanent exhibitions, you can explore the people & events that shaped this amazing region of South Dakota.

Explore what northeastern South Dakota looked like before early settlers arrived, and you might be surprised to learn that the area used to be very tree-less, and most of the trees were hand planted.

The "New Dawn on the Prairie" exhibit offers something for anyone who has an interest in railroad history of agriculture, with a newly remodelled gallery showcasing the development of agriculture from the very first homesteaders in Dakota Territory, right through to contemporary farms of today,

You can experience life in a tarpaper shack, check out a prairie kitchen, and immerse yourselves in the interactive computer station to take you through numerous aspects of a prairie settlement.

Then, the rail history comes to life as you view an 1890s rail station complete with maps, schedules, and a ticket master, plus there is an operational, period model train too!

The Squire Gallery at the Dacotah Prairie Museum features vignettes of the history of Dakota Territory, which is a wonderful way for kids to SEE just how life would have been in the past, from an 1880s parlor, to Native American homesteads.

There is SO much history in the South Dakota region, so why not explore it all at the Dacotah Prairie Museum - you never know what you just might learn!
