About S.S. Klondike National Historic Site of Canada

S.S. Klondike National Historic Site of Canada pays tribute to an era of riverboat transportation and the inland water transportation system that linked the Yukon to the outside world before the advent of roads.

A visit to the S.S. Klondike takes you back to a time when it was waterways, not roads, which provided remote Yukon communities with a lifeline to the outside world – a time when steam powered sternwheelers chugged up and down the Yukon River carrying gold, silver-lead ore, freight, mail and passengers seeking fortune or adventure.

Alow the interpreters to give you an in-depth story of the riverboats that made their way through the tricky currents of the river and hear the fascinating stories of life on the river. And, find out what the crew did if the ship got stuck on a sandbar! The guided tours provide fun, education and lots of facts.

There are new interpretive panels that deepends the perspectives and stories at the national historic site. Learn through audio exhibits, photos and visual designs and reflect on the many chances that came to the Yukon in the riverboat era. Make sure to stop by at the gift shop to take something home with you to remember your special visit!
