Serpentine Fen
About Serpentine Fen
Serpentine Fen is a scenic trail through a nature reserve with three wooden towers that offer panoramic views of the area. The nature reserve is perfect for any avid bird watcher as you'll find more than 100 different species that visit the area depending on the time of year! September and October are the busiest birding season and in the winter, many of the birds shelter in the fen where there is open water and a natural food supply.
Start your trail from the gravel parking area and fllow the trail to where you'll come across a large map. It's be your end point too and is around a 3km loop in total. Complete the loop by following the trail, cross a couple of small bridges and walk past the dyke back to the parking lot. It's a great trail for small children too!
There are lots of freshwater marshes and a small tidal brackish water mark which are really important to the wildlife populations, including birds, mammals, reptiles and fish. There's also a covered picnic area just off 44th advenue, so bring some supplies with you!
It'll tale around 40 minutes to complete in total and there's a nice mix of shade and sun along the way too!
