Hearts Content Cable Station is a well-preserved monument to the world'd first succesffl trans-oceanic submarine telegraph cable in 1866. It connected North America to Europe via a telegraphc cable and was a major milestone in gloval communications.
Imagine... President Abraham Lincoln has been assassinated but London's papers aren't reporting it - it'll take 10 days for the news to reach Europe by ship... In July 1866, after nine years and several unsuccessful attempts, the first permanent telegraph cable connecting Europe and North America was hauled ashore at Heart's Content.
This little Newfoundland town leaped into the history books and remained a global communications hub for over a century. The cable station opened the world to the outport men and women who worked here and remains a time capsule of the communications technology that connected us all right up to the 1960s.
The exhibits focus on the history of the the telegraphc and the role it played in the industry. You'll experience a guided tour, explore morse code by sending coded messaged, get hands on and table lego challenges and watch a 20-minute film about the effort too! Cross the road to explore Cable Park to see the remnant of the cable that was once the only connection between North America and Europe.
