Gwaii Haanas means "Islands of Beauty" in the Haida language, and when you visit you can see why! Gwaii Haanas embodies the essence of the rugged beauty and rich ecology of the Pacific coast. It is a celebration of more than ten thousand years of Haida connection with the land and sea.
For some visitors, this opportunity to witness a living culture, and immerse themselves in nature is a spiritual experience.
The lush rainforests may surprise you, and look up and you might see skies filled with bald eagles. Moss-draped cedars tower above Haida people's ancient carved poles, if you wanted a cultural experience for the kids whilst enjoying outdoor adventure, this is the place to be!
You can spend your days exploring ancient Haida village sites, with century old remains of multi-tiered longhouses. Kids can cruise through the ocean just teeming with wildlife, seeing whales breach, and dolphins ride the bow waves, and perhaps sea lions barking from the rocky outcrops.
You can even kayak up close to wildlife and Haida culture too!

Any top tips when visiting?
All self-guided Gwaii Haanas visitors must attend an orientation session. Please allow 1.5 hours for the session. It is a legal requirement and provides safety information and traveller protocols. This session is also an excellent introduction to the natural and cultural history of the area. All scheduled orientations take place in Classroom One at the Haida Heritage Centre. It is not necessary to reserve space in orientations.

Be prepared with your planned entry and departure dates. Keep in mind that July and August are the busiest periods and the number of visitors allowed to enter Gwaii Haanas each day is limited.
