About Taronga Zoo

As far as zoos go, Taronga Zoo is one of the most special. The view of Sydney Harbour is incredible, and with over 21 hectares of animals and fun things to explore, it's one of the largest of it's kind in the world!

The zoo is home to over 4,000 animals - that's a lot of animals for you to see! For this reason, the zoo is perfect for a whole day with the family. There is SO much to see!

Many of the 350 species at the zoo are threatened, so the zoo takes great pride in looking after the animals they have, as well as educating all the visitors on the importance of conservation, what is being done, and how to help. We want these beautiful creatures around in the future!

Okay, so you want to know about the animals themselves? Sure!

They have animals from all over the world, in all shapes and sizes. Come face to face with the beautiful Sumatran Tiger, or watch the sweet Asian elephants play! The very popular koalas are there, as well as those long necked friends from Africa - the giraffe! (See if you can spot how long the tongue is!).  They have the threatened Black Rhino, and the sweet little meerkats. Want us to keep going? The bilby, lemurs, penguins, wombats, gorillas, tree-kangaroos, sea-lions ...they're all there! And they're waiting for you to say hi!

The zoo offer many opportunities for kids to get right up close to the animals and learn more about them. There are amazing free shows, you can drop into a keeper talk, or treat yourself to a once in a lifetime animal encounter - kids will have an amazing experience!

There are also plenty of activities going on in the zoo. You can book a tour, kids can be part of Zoo Adventures during the holidays - so keep an eye on their calendar and see what takes your fancy!

You'll have a roaring time!
