The National Museum of Australia is an incredibly fascinating museum experience for the whole family, as not only do the exhibitions bring to life the rich and diverse stories of Australia thanks so a host of compelling objects, ideas and events, but there are also a number of experiences dedicated JUST for kids!

Based in Canberra, the collection of the National Museum of Australia is linked to key moments, people and places in the country's history and culture. 

Kids can discover the incredible story of the vast, vibrant Australian continent in their Great Southern Land gallery.

Why not explore the shared stories and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from all across the country?

The museum even has VR experiences too!

Don't miss a visit to the Tim and Gina Fairfax Discovery Centre either - an immersive play space for kids of all abilities from birth to 6 years. They offer free daily activities in the mini makers corner plus story time sessions on select days during ACT term time!

I’m Hungry! Can I get food at National Museum of Australia?

There is a great cafe open weekdays 9am to 4pm and weekends 9am to 4.30pm, offering menus designed to match the season.

Any top tips when visiting?

Enhance your Museum experience by taking a guided tour! They run daily, but costs apply.

Does National Museum of Australia have a gift shop?

The Shop is located just inside the main Museum entrance and is open 9am to 5pm daily - everything they sell has it's own story to tell! Pick up homewares, glassware, jewellery, First Nations products, toys, books, bath and body products, candles, gifts and more!

Teachers corner

Every object in the National Museum tells a story and their dynamic, curriculum-linked school programs bring these stories to life! Give them a call to arrange your school visit!

Is National Museum of Australia fully accessible?

The Museum is committed to providing and improving access for all who visit. Lifts are available for accessing each of the Museum’s three levels and they also offer accessible parking and bathrooms.

Bring your own wheelchair or if you’d like to use their, they suggest booking 24 hours in advance
