Mill Mountain Zoo is all about giving families an amazing experience meeting and learning about animals from all over the world, and YOU can have a front row seat!
Mill Mountain Zoo is home to more than 175 animals across a range of species, including mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates. In addition, 21 of these are vulnerable species, giving kids an invaluable lesson in conservation at the same time too!
Are you excited to hear about some of the animals you can meet at this Virginia favorite? Well, why don't we start with the mammals? Marvel at the beautiful features on the lynx, or check out the claws on the fishing cat.
The tiny porcupine is always a delight, or learn about how the red wolves communicate with each other. Then of course, make sure you dedicate some time to the vulnerable species such as the snow leopard.
Reptiles are always great fun for kids to see, from the Burmese pythons to variety of tortoises. Then, from the scales to the feathers, Mill Mountain Zoo is home to some beautifully colorful birds including the ibis and crane.
Throughout the year, the zoo hosts a number of fun events including Night Howls where you can hear the zoo come to life, breakfast with the animals to start your day in a WILD way, Zoo Boo over Halloween, and many more!

They firmly believe that a little knowledge can go a long way in cultivating respect and love for animals. That’s why they work hard to provide a variety of educational programs and learning opportunities at the Zoo and within the community!
I’m Hungry! Can I get food at Mill Mountain Zoo?
Mill Mountain Zoo does not have a restaurant, but you can purchase a variety of chips, crackers, candy and other snacks in the Gift Shop. Bottled beverages such as water and soda are also available, and they now have ice cream treats as well!
Any top tips when visiting?
The schedule changes for the keeper chats daily, so check with Guest Services when you arrive or call in the morning to find out what will be happening during your visit.
Does Mill Mountain Zoo have a gift shop?
Mill Mountain Zoo has a great gift shop offering a variety of children’s toys, t-shirts, hats, artwork and souvenirs for you or to give as a gift to someone special. All profits benefit the Zoo’s education and conservation efforts.
Teachers corner
The Zoo is a great place for school groups, scout troops, church groups and others. They also offer Animal Encounters Outreach Programs so if you can not visit the Zoo, they can visit you. Their education programs include encounters with live animals too!
